About me

Before joining UWE as a Senior Lecturer in March 2022, Dr Sunny Chan worked as an Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 2018 to 2021. Within these three years, in the role of principal investigator, Dr Chan has obtained research grants such as Early Career Scheme (ECS), General Research Fund (GRF) and the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) from Hong Kong, totaling more than £511,000. In the past few years, he has published more than 30 peer-reviewed journal papers and book chapters.

His research interests mainly focus on mental health, sleep, mood disorder, emotion regulation, and mind-body intervention, specifically on mindfulness and tai chi. He has gained ample clinical experiences in the field of mental health through working in various public hospitals and non-governmental organizations in Hong Kong, including acute psychiatric service, community psychiatric rehabilitation, and psychological intervention for common mental disorders. 

Apart from his endeavor in research, he is also a certified cognitive therapist, private counselor, mindfulness teacher, and tai chi practitioner. He has several years of experience in mindfulness practice and conducting mindfulness-based intervention programme. He even received extensive training on mindfulness in Hong Kong, Beijing, Taiwan and USA.

Principal Investigator. Understanding Sleep Patterns and Coping Strategies in Older Adults with Dementia. Funded by NIHR (Undergraduate Internship Programme). Award amount: £6,292 (award period: Apr 2024 – Mar 2025, status: ongoing)

Co-Investigator. Transforming assessment and diagnosis of dementia in Bristol for people from Chinese, Caribbean and South Asian and communities. Funded by NIHR (Programme Development Grant). Award amount: £121,067 (award period: Jul 2024 – Sep 2025, status: ongoing)

Co-Investigator. Supporting occupational therapists in making discharge decisions using a Digital App. Funded by NIHR (The Invention for Innovation (i4i) programme – Funding At the Speed of Translation). Award amount: £12,195 (award period: Apr 2024 – Sep 2024, status: ongoing)

Co-Investigator. The use of Melatonin to aid sleep in patients suffering with dementia. Funded by Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire ICB (Researcher in Residence). Award amount: £5,000 (award period: Oct 2023 – June 2024, status: ongoing)
